I think the importance is identifying that a guy can be gay and either be a 'tomgirl' or not, and vice versa. Someone being either isn't a reliable point of guessing whether someone is the latter, too.
The same can be said for women. A lesbian could be a tomboy or not, and a tomboy could be a lesbian or not. Being a tomboy/girl has no direct tie to sexuality. As I understand it, at least what you've described, it's more to do with what one'd usually say are unrelated mannerisms and preferences.

Not necessarily. You get feminine straight guys and masculine gay guys. You can't really pigeonhole people like that.
