Is it normal that my boyfriend doesn't look at me when we dance?

We went to a prom type thing and when we were dancing, almost the entire time he would look everywhere in the room but at me. It felt odd because I would be looking him in the eyes or watching him dance and he would be looking around, scanning the room, while dancing. I looked at other couples dancing and they would be looking at eachother while dancing and the guys looked at their girlfriends admiringly.

I got all dressed up for it and while dancing, he kept repeating I was the prettiest girl there and that my dress was amazing, but his eyes wouldn't even be looking at me while saying it.

It made me feel odd so I asked him why and if he was checking out other girls or something. He said no and that he just likes observing people.

Is this normal? Why would someone do this? He also tends not to give me eye contact often when I talk.

It's not because he's nervous or awkward either because he's the most outgoing and confident person I've ever met.

He might be outgoing and confident at speaking distance, but it can be intimidating to have someone in your 'bubble.' I've taught young people ballroom dancing for years, and if a guy isn't used to dancing with a girl or otherwise having a girl in his bubble, it can feel really awkward for him.

If he told you those things, I wouldn't worry about it. He just wasn't used to the feeling of having you that close.

It's possible but he's actually very familiar and amazing at dancing. He grew up learning all the latin American dance styles and dances a lot with his mom, sister, and cousins. He is also very touchy feely and we've been together for almost 2 years so he's very comfortable around me.

I even wondered if maybe he was embarrassed to be dancing with me because I'm not good at it. It just seemed like he was uninterested in me.

Gotcha. I didn't realize he's an experienced dancer, or I'd have mentioned another possibility - dance alignment. In proper dance form, the guy looks over the girl's shoulder, and she over his. It allows him to see where to lead her and how to maneuver on the dance floor, and it keeps the couple in proper alignment to keep them from stepping on each other.

If he's an experienced dancer, that was most likely why he didn't look directly at you.

Personally, I couldn't keep my eyes off my girlfriend when we were dancing. She wasn't super comfortable dancing since all the songs were really energetic pop or electronic music. We left early when there weren't any slow songs and I played one on my phone. We slow danced in the parking lot. It was incredible.

Very very normal, he's just shy and maybe you looked really pretty and he doesn't want to blush in front of everyone and stuff.

Pretty normal. Looking someone in the eyes can seem intimate or intimidating to a lot of people. (I always look people in the eyes and I consistently get comments about it).
