How do aloof guys act when they actually like someone?

He always stares at me when I see him in the halls in college, but he does it with this odd, blank expression and just focuses on me as if no one else was around. He acts very aloof though and almost never starts a conversation with me or anyone else (even friends), but when I start talking to him he’s always nice and conversational, but nonetheless aloof. He’s not shy, he just always seems distanced from everyone. I’m confused because he stares at me which makes me think he’s interested, but he rarely tries to talk to me and always seems so cool and reserved about everything (almost bored). But as I said, he acts this way even with his friends.

He has started sitting next to me in class and there have been a few times that he has stood really close by me (so close that it would have been uncomfortable with anyone else). Also, a while ago after we had first met and we had only talked once, he asked me if I knew a friend of his because they were talking about people he knew from my hometown and his friend thought he knew me. Since he and I had barely talked at this point, mentioning me to someone as if we were friends seemed unusual. Anyway, some days it feels like he is blatantly ignoring me and other days he seems to make a pointed effort to look at me, but anytime I see him outside of class he just stares at me.
