Yesterday I complimented his personality and he wrote a compliment back to me about mine which was rephrasing what I wrote to him lol

I would say, that if you have regular interaction with anyone in a way that doesn't relate to events, common interest, work or family they have a like of you.

Personality compliments are a little vauge though, a person can easily say something to be nice in that space. "I love your way of handing matter" probably means just that, and doesn't convey any particular interest in a person. That said, if there is a complementary theme and it seems like its honest and natural, its probably a sign of love or at least infatuation.

SO a guys compliment on your personality is neutral. It may or may not contain an expression of interest. If your interested in them, you can 'esculate' and compliment something about their physical appearence relating to handsomenes. Though its a tricky space because often any compliment in a social setting expects or preceeds a reciprical compliment in just polite conversation. Just look for themes and an esculation towards complimenting your looks.

Depends on who you're talking to, I give friendly compliments to friends and affectionate compliments to people I like.

For friends "It was fun hanging out with you" "You've got a good sense of humour" - Then for people I like it's more personal and meaningful "I really enjoyed our time together, I'd love to do this again" Pretty much the longer the better, plus a different choice of words.
