Don’t quite understand the expression. It was said just out of the blue.

It's a very high compliment. Not sure why it would perplex you.

He is saying that you are sensitive and caring. That you are not harsh or mean spirited. It means he sees you as someone that he can trust and feel safe with and share his feelings with.

It means that he sees you as kind and caring. That you are not absorbed by your own feelings, by care about the feelings of others and are not sharp tongued or short tempered.

That he said it to you our of the blue suggests that your warmth and tenderness feel real to him and that he trusts you. It certainly suggests that he cares about you.

Hopefully, you are everything that the phrase suggests that you are. Hopefully, he is right about you. Because there will be nothing so painful to him - more piercing and hurtful - than to find that you are not everything that he sees in you.

You have, in that sense, a lot to live up to.

Someone said to me once "you're a good human being", but the person meant it in negative way as I'm too benevolent and too willing for compromises.
