What does it mean when a guy says he doesn’t know how he feels and he can’t process his emotions?

I know he’s attracted to me, and previously before this we were talking about me coming over and watching a film together, which he was very up for watching :) ( once lockdown is over ).
This guy has been back and forth on anti depressants, and has had a real battle with drugs ( Cocaine etc). And he’s trying to recover. We were talking and got really open and so I decided to ask him how he felt and this is his reply? What do you think? X

Going over like that is a fat step and will cause large emotional swings

His instincts tell him that it can make things fall apart so he's just keeping it at bay a little.
That's the more likely option

He might just be shy

I think it means exactly what it says. He doesn't know how he feels right now and isn't currently able to process it. Between depression and overcoming addiction, I imagine he's already got a lot on his plate. It's not a good time to think about romance when all of your focus is on just getting by day to day.
