What does it mean when someone who rejected you asks why you liked him?

I confessed to my crush 7 months ago, he texted me yesterday for the first time in 7 months asking why I liked him. I told him a few things and then asked why, he responded with, "Because I dont think girls would be interested in me." I don't know why he sent this, it sounded like he was fishing for a compliment or something. Why do you think he asked this to me? Like at this point I'm almost over him and suddenly he comes back?
Yesterday I met him after he texted me 10 minutes later I see him and have to serve him at the waterpark consessions I work at. He waved and laughed at my shyness, I'm happy and totally surprised that I saw him. But totally confused on why he decided to text me months later, it makes me a bit upset actually. I was doing totally fine and I feel like a second option now.

I've wondered that about people who have asked me out, and that I rejected. I never asked them, because I feel like it's a bit insensitive, and I want them to move on, but I've wondered.

It often comes from a place of insecurity. I grew up in an extremely unhealthy environment, and it's very common for people who grew up like that to feel unlovable. So when I was most curious about it was also when I couldn't wrap my head around why anyone would like me. Or when I was frustrated because I kept attracting guys, but not the guys I wanted to attract, and I started to think it would never happen. I wanted to know why they liked me, just so that I could feel a little better about myself.

It also sometimes happens when a guy says he likes certain things in a girl. But then he likes me, and I don't think that I have any of the qualities he says he likes. It's kind of confusing.

The other example that sticks out is of a guy that was so sweet, and went above and beyond what anyone had ever done for me. Even after I had made it very clear that I didn't feel the same way about him, he wrote music for me, and would say the nicest things that I have ever heard, constantly giving me the most thoughtful compliments, and coordinating big projects with other people just to make me smile. He completely accepted my rejection, and we stayed good friends, but he did far more for me than he did for any other friends, and was quite open about how he felt for me. And I just felt so guilty that I couldn't return his feelings. I would tear myself up about it. And the guilt got to the point where I would wonder if I could turn off whatever it was that made him feel that way for me. Just so that he could move on. Because I care so much about him. Just not in the way he wants.

Now, I would never actually ask these guys why they liked me. Because I don't want to remind them of the fact that I rejected them, or potentially give them the impression that I might change my mind. But I've wanted to know, so it's entirely possible that the guy who asked you is in a similar situation. He might just be insecure, he might just be curious, or he might be feeling guilty.

And by the way, it's completely valid to be upset over it. Regardless of his reasoning, it's kind of a selfish question to actually ask someone. I can see why it would hurt.

He needs attention and compliments. Chances are he felt insecure and now need to feel loved so he is using you. Be cold to him and reply very very slowly
