Guys explain why you "side hug" a girl?

This guy I had a one night fling over a year ago met up at an event. He seemed preoccupied with his phone the short time we hung out. I thought we'd hang out after the event. He walked me to my car and gave me an Awkward side hug... I'm so confused 😕.

A year ago we hooked up, booze was involved. This round we did a day time activity.

I think a side hug is a friendlier type of hug. When you don't know exactly how close you are to someone but you still wanna hug that person (to greet for example).

I have asked a similar question last week iirc, about how much personal and/or sexualized a hug is, and while most people said that it is a friendly way of greeting someone, I actually feel myself like a hug is a bit more personal than that, and that you need to know a person pretty well to give them a hug. Like, if I were to meet with my best friend's wife, I would probably just give her an awkward side hug, if necessary...

So, personally, if I barely know a girl, I would try to avoid hugging her, unless she initiates the hug, because I don't want to have her understand a wrong message. But if I am trying to get closer to a girl (not just physically, but also on a relationship level, be it love or friendship) then I would probably try to give her a side hug, to see if I get any signal to go all the way for a full hug, or if she comes around to do that. But most of the time that doesn't really happen...

Yea it was rude, I even asked him the next day why he even asked me to the event since he seemed so pre occupied w/the phone! I felt rejected when we were casually meeting as Acquaintances

My daughters friends give me hugs. I told my daughter at first that I didn't want them to hug me. They did it anyway. The only girl that respected my wishes was the black girl. It looked really bad. My daughter told me I was overreacting.
So side hugs, short side hugs in full view of everyone and I'm never alone with anyone. Daughter always goes with me when I'm dropping them off.
Side hugs are safe hugs.
