He's nice then he's not and the cycle repeats itself. Why do guys do this?

Why would a guy pay special attention to a girl, help her out, and show all the signs of liking her, then turn into a total jerk and start being rude... only to go back to being nice again?
Then he worries that the girl might be pissed at him...

I just recently experienced all those with a guy that I dated. I realized that he has a certain mental illness that may cause him to do all those to me.

That certain mental illness causes him to have low confidence, very sensitive interpersonally, etc. So he kept testing me to the point I started finding out and feeling uncomfortable.

And since he has low confidence, yes he also seemed to worry that I might lose interest and leave him. And when I accidentally did something he didn't like, he didn't want to communicate with me to solve the problem. Instead, he went ahead to leave me abruptly. Because with that certain mental illness he was afraid to be rejected by me. So he had to leave me first before I could tell him that I wanted to leave him.

I think if you're tired of the cycle, you can just tell him you have no more interest and tell him your feelings.

Maybe he's just a human being who goes through the normal emotional gamut.

Nope. Because he has a permanent life stressor that is visible, and only when I mention things (whether accidentally or on purpose) that are related to that stressor or the depression itself he would then demonstrate depression behaviors.
