If a guy thought a girl was cute would he just randomly walk up to her and ask her out?

I get a lot of staring but no guy actually comes up to me and starts talking

I had a friend that used to do this. He got shot down most of the time but due to the law of averages he went out on quite a few girls. One day I went with him to a convenience store because he said he was going to ask the girl that worked there (Miss X) on a date. We go in there and he asks for X. The girl at the counter says that she was not working that day. My friend talks the girl in the store to give him X's phone number. This was befoe cell phones so he calls X from the pay phone in the store. It turns out that there were two girls named X that worked there and he called the wrong one. However he talked to other X for a while and than he asks her out and she agrees to go out with him.

I think in this day in age it’s a lot less common. Especially since there is such a thin line between harassment and flirting (in fact in a lot of movies there are scenes where guys do this - and in real life their actions could be interpreted as harassment) There is certainly more awareness in todays society amongst men that we are more cautious not to tread those waters. I know if I like a girl and I’m in the right environment I’ll find a way to strike up a conversation and get a good feeling on how interested the girl is before I even try flirting. Then if my flirting is well received and returned, I’ll usually ask them out if for their number.
