How often do you see someone when you’re dating long distance?

So I’ve been dating someone long distance for 4 months. He was in a 10 year relationship about a year ago so he’s not ready for something serious yet, he said he still has his guard up. This past weekend I went to his hometown to have dinner with his parents and meet all of his childhood friends. His mom text messages me and wants me to move there. When I came back home I asked to see him in two weeks. He said it would be too much (he always pays for our trips including hotel and meals; he won’t allow me to pay lol). He said he needs to lay low and save up.
I want to see him in May. But I’m nervous to ask. Should I wait a few weeks then ask? Or hold off asking in general so I don’t come off as needy and let him initiate?

Never dated someone Long distance who was actually within distance. So haven't done so yet. I think the quickest I ever planned was a year, but it was over by then. If they were living in distance well that would be easy enough in england not hard to get somewhere on train for not a bad price really. So probably at least every week or 2 if not more.

I’m in Arizona and he’s in Mississippi. So I can only fly. So far I saw him in December, February, March. And I wanted to see him in April. But it was too much for him financially. I want to ask him about may but I’m not sure if that is too much. I don’t want to be pushy or annoying
