Why might a man be quieter when it’s just the two of us?

I find he directs conversations and greets my friend first and when she leaves and it’s just the two of us he is quieter. I can’t tell if this means he’s got not much interest in me and more interest in my friend? Or could he be nervous around me

Nervous. Doesn't know what to say (like you might feel around a guy you like). Might not be good with conversation in general? (lots of guys are like this) If he's not one for general chit chat as it is maybe?

He loves to talk and he can talk with me over text and phone fine but when he’s alone with me he gets quieter. He seems to always direct greetings, goodbyes and conversations towards my friend first. This is why I start to wonder if he likes her.
