Why does my guy friend get quiet when we are alone?

I have a guy friend that we talk and laugh when we are in a group together. But when we are alone it gets awkward and quiet. We talk a little but once the group is back together we talk just fine again. Any ideas on why he does this?

It could be shyness. When he is in a group he might feel backed by the group and one-on-one he might feel a bit intimidated.
