Do they mean what there saying?

When guys start a fight with you for really no reason is there truth to what they're saying to you for example "you do absolutely nothing for me, I don't care about you, I wish you would leave"? Why do you guys say such mean and hurtful things like that I don't get it do they mean what they're saying or is it just words they're saying cuz they know it's hurtful?
