I don't think it's a strategy to fool you, it could be but rather sounds like they are frustrated with life and need someone to talk to.
It could also been seen as a chance because if you give him the feeling that you acknowledge him and his problem you give him the feeling that he could trust you.
That would make you special in his eyes and be a turn on for him because not all guys are just in for the sex.
Either it is a tactic to get you to feel sorry for them and to be with them or they actually got a lot of bagging that they never talk about with anyone and they so happen to find you to be someone they can tell it all out on.
Guys love telling dad stories cause they know girls will empathize with them
Because it’s assumed that it’s a “feel bad for me” thing, and in the context that this question was asked, that mindset makes perfect sense. I don’t talk about “sad” things because I have nothing sad to talk about. I like to write poetry and short stories so maybe I can make up a sad story, but otherwise, nothing traumatic nor sad is on my mind all the time. If someone is that depressed, go to a therapist and grow a set

Depends, he just be a guy feeling comfortable and opening up. Males have different societal norms than females and it isn't often most guys will just spill their guts to someone. People use it against them later.
