But this feels more like he wants to say I love you, but instead figures it's safer to say he really likes your personality.

If it is manipulation, he's trying to deny you hearing what he thinks you want to hear. It's a simple move and more about keeping you interested than in him expressing something genuine.

But I don't know. Frankly, I won't date straight men anymore, so I'm starting to lose tolerance for their shenanigans.
