Why a guy who doesn't like a girl that has a crush on him plays with her emotions and make fun of her with his friends?

My question is why would a girl still have a crush on a guy who doesn’t like her back and makes DJ of her with his friends🙁he probably acts that way because he doesn’t want them to think that if he defends you he likes you. He wants to look cool with his friends and cares more about their opinions and approval than trying to have your back. It’s all messed up and childish but I hope his behavior makes the girl change her feelings about him and lose interest in someone like that.
