My friend plays video games better than me, how do I get him to relax?

He always brags about it and consistently teases me for not doing something in the game, or not understanding how something works in it. Is there a way I can get him to relax a bit? I mean it's just a game, but this guy thinks he's a know-it-all about all aspects of it... :/

Oooo one of those guys... yeah that might be difficult to nearly impossible. I play games too and last week we kicked someone out of the group who sounds just like the guy you mentioned. We clearly stated that it was a chill group, for laid back gaming, nothing too serious or competitive. He joins and starts going off on who ever fails at a game mechanic. The man even invited his own girlfriend to the group who was relaxed like us but then he would go off on her. You'd think he'd be nice to his girlfriend but no. We had to kick him for the better.

It's about having fun. If he wants to take it serious, he should play Ranked Mode. Remind him of that, at least.

Video games appeal to a hard-wired instinct in men from out evolutionary past: competition (often like hunting or war) in which achievement is rewarded. As such, it is highly addicting to many men, just like social media is to many women because it simulates elements found in human female social hierarchies. Just tell your friend it’s just a game. If he spends hours on it routinely, explain that he needs help with the addiction.

I would say to take your cloths off but that won’t work on guys like that. If he is just a no it all and teasing you about not knowing stuff the only way to get him to relax is to give him more exposure to you not knowing stuff and trying to learn. Maybe even bring in your friends who also don’t know as much and let him see that he is just so knowledgeable on those games.

I know somebody in our Discord group who has his lady play games with us. She is a bit "old fashion" and isn't really mechanically adept to make it to higher tier competitive ladders.

She isn't somebody we would bring into a Diamond IV match in Apex Legends, nor somebody we would bring into a Masters game of Overwatch. We have no problem playing terraria, minecraft, or some other casual game with her though.

I'm extremely aggressive with teamates when facing a loss and ultra competitive in competitive games. I'd argue that I'm worse than your friend, based on what you are describing.

Try to see if your friend is willing to play some chill games with you that they might enjoy. If he is a console gamer, that might be waaay easier said than done... Unless they are a Nintendo Switch gamer.

It’s hard. If it’s a highly competitive game, he needs to understand he’s playing with a casual player. Unfortunately, it’s not just a game for some people. If he can’t chill out, you’ll just have to just stop playing with him if it isn’t fun. The point is to have fun.

You don't, difficulty is fun, and if he does worse on purpose it will ruin his fun. You just need to practice if you want to be on equal footing.

If you just want him to stop teasing and bragging rather than relax on competativeness as a whole, get a new friend, I'm good at games and I don't tease or brag.
