What does it mean when a guy ends things.. but then says he’s sorry and asks you to give him a little time to get himself together?

I know he’s told me he’s going through a lot when we first met, and I told him that if he needed me I’d be there for him… But recently he ended things and said we can just be friends.. and then hours later messaged me again saying to give him time to get himself together….

So I'm not saying this to discourage you or break your spirits, but don't hold on to hope that anything will work out with him. The reason why is because people - and it's not just this guy, both men and women do this - who want to end a relationship with you because they're going through things, are also usually dealing with things internally as well. And when people are unhappy, they have the counterintuitive logic that removing you from their lives/space is going to help them think better, be happier, etc.

But they then find that they're still unhappy and dealing with internal things even after you're out of the picture. This is because these kinds of people don't know how to deal with their inner issues, so they think removing you helps them solve it.

They will tell you things just like the guy told you, give him time to get himself together. A person who really likes you, wants to be with you, and is happy with you and how you contribute to their world, is not going to need time or space to have to get themselves together. They will still want you in their lives regardless of what they're going through, and they'll want you to want them to be apart of yours as well. So as I said, not to discourage you or be a bearer of bad news, but it doesn't seem like a situation that will be very good for you. He'll probably go back and forth like this more times down the road, and you need to think about if that's what you're okay with.
