Shy and low confidence are two different things. Many people are giving you examples of what a guy with low confidence would do (little or no eye contact, not talking to you much or very loud or changing his tone of voice, timidly looking at you from afar, etc.). But a guy who is just shy will look and act different. I've been there.

As a once terribly shy young guy, I remember being smitten so bad that my sentences were completely unintelligible, and it seemed as if I had 5 legs, 3 heads and 7 arms, all of which were completely out of my control.

Horrifying to me at the time, but looking back, I just chuckle.

As much as I would have liked to have had things differently, that was me at the time.
