What does it mean when you ask a guy out and he says she has to check his schedule?

Asked a guy out and hr told me that his family was coming into town during those days and he was not sure if he could make it. he told me he would check his schedule since he did not have his planner on him and let me know the next time he sees me (which is Friday).

oh, he also said “I do not want to say “no” and make you think I don’t want to go.” I am assuming that means he does want to go then? If he tells me he is just too busy on that day should I try to reschedule or leave it up to him ti suggest a new day?
