Why are lots of men and boys embarrassed about wearing speedos?

Lots of male competitive swimmers wear speedos by choice, but many (perhaps most) guys who aren't competitive swimmers seem to really dislike wearing speedos, at least in UK/US.

E. g. when I went on holiday to France last summer with some friends, we found out the rules of the pool and water park at our hotel were that men and boys could only wear speedos, and our male friends did not seem happy about that haha. And when we did swimming in PE in school in from year 9 to 11 they also had that rule for the swimming uniform and the boys always seemed a bit embarrassed about that too haha. I think they changed the rule eventually because the boys kept complaining.

Why do (many/most) guys seem to dislike wearing speedos so much, and so much more than e. g. a short pair of swim shorts? Is it that the bulge is too prominent? Is it that the design is perceived as feminine? Do they think they look unattractive? (they don't by the way haha).

(In both cases I've observed there was a bit of teasing from the girls of the boys but only because they were already shy, so I don't think that can be the only reason)

I have kind of an exhibitionist streak, so I wouldn't be embarrassed about my bulge being visible in a speedo, but I likely would never wear one in public, for two reasons.

The first being that it's just generally not socially acceptable to do so. A lot of peoole find speedos on men to just be very cringey, and I wouldn't want to be "that guy".

The second reason being more situational, but more important. If I were to get an erection while wearing one, there's no way it would stay in the speedo. Speedos are just so small, and constricting, that part of my erection would literally be sticking out of it, uncovered. I'd rather not go to jail for indecent exposure over my bathing suit choice.

It takes some getting used to. I was a swimmer and didn’t like it at first. Your bulge is out there for everyone to see. After getting over it, I like them now. Maybe I’m the odd one but typically wear them all the time to the pool or beach

Think you hit most of the reasons! Yeah, it definitely feels embarrassing. Even growing up California where water sports like swimming and water polo are common, didn't wear my first speedo until my twenties. It was very intimidating. You definitely put yourself out there. And honestly I was always worried I would get excited seeing other girls and guys in their suits. But once practice started always became the last thought in my mind. I've seen a lot that women don't like guys wearing speedos so that factors a lot. It's not modest so once you're seen like that it can't be undone. For me, think it was just practice wearing speedos and getting comfortable with myself and being proud I worked to keep myself healthy. When I first started swimming I was so embarrassed to wear a speedo I only swam around 5 am so no one would see me. Luckily no one ever judged or made a bad remark. I'm super comfortable wearing speedos now. Wear them with a lot of confidence swimming; even did a triathlon wearing just a speedo. If a guy wears one in public he probably is probably pretty confident and comfortable with who he is

Because it is very easy to see our genitals in it, and men are in general self conscious about that. It's also not "normal" in the US/UK society for men to expose that much skin.

I think it's partly the bulge thing and partly just that wearing speedos is almost going nude. I also hated having to wear them in school especially in co-ed classes and would never wear them by choice.

I dont know what the problem is. when i started getting into swimming and going to the beach i just went with a speedo because it seemed to be the best option.
