Why do you think he's watching to see if you're online? Maybe he's just online doing whatever and you log on and he gets a notification from whatever program you are using. A lot software is like that. They tell you when your friends log on...

Because we have mutual friends and they've told me so. He doesn't have many people on his accounts

So it would be more likely you'd be noticed being he has very few people added to his accounts. I doubt he's keeping tabs on when you're online. The guy is probably just online. He gets a notification that you logged on and either he's like heh whats up and talks to you or he's notified you posted something new and he clicks on it to check it out since it's something new that happened when he was online.
