"To regard with loving admiration" and "to be fond of" are both definitions in Webster-Mirriam. Cambridge defines it as "to love someone very much, especially in a way that shows a lot of admiration or respect, or to like something very much". I dunno where you get your idea of the word adore but it's definitely wrong.

@GreatBigCircles not the dictionary but from personal experience. Like I said I've been told "I adore you" multiple times and in each case it was strictly platonic, "Fond of". Hence my original response. It's not a bad term by any means but it's not a term most use when they have romantic intentions.

Well yea. Adoring isn't inherently romantic, but it's isn't mutually exclusive either. Adoration can cover pretty much every kind of love. I hear it used in both contexts where I live frequently, as well in the circles I hang out in online.
