What a tough question! OK. Well standards: That makes it easier.
Fitness makes a guy handsome. No one needs to be an Arnold Schwarzeneggar. Toned muscles, able to do some hard work and climb the stairs without huffing and puffing. Has physical stamina.
Knowledgeable. A handsome guy needs to have good general knowledge. Know some things about some things. About the way things work. Have skills. Can cook, wield a hammer and screwdriver, knows some bits about cars.
Generous and patient. A handsome guy is able to share what they know to better YOU! And enjoys the teaching. Like the dad who shows you how to drive a car. God bless that man!
And on just the shallow area of looks: a nice pair of curvy legs! Looks great in shorts. Has a butt, if he's lucky enough genetically. Not too big, but nice and rounded and muscular. Height is not important unless he's too close to 5'. That's a bit short. But I have a cousin who is 4'8"' tall and owns an oil consulting business and is a genius. He has a wife a foot taller! Cute as a button and funny also.
A good face. Regular features. Big pretty eyes of any color are great. A strong jaw/defined chin. A deep voice.
Again, everyone isn't lucky enough in the genetic lottery to have ALL these things. But some combinations of the physical is enough. Not bone thin and not sloppy fat. A chunky guy is OK if he's a solid chunk. A slim guy is OK if he's muscular and slim.
HANDSOME involves the BIG PICTURE. The combination of all the best qualities of a man.
Based on scientific/aesthetic principles, a symmetrical face generally proportioned in certain ways to phi (the golden ratio) tends to create the "ideal" facial structure. "Fuller" hair is considered ideal on both sexes (denotes youth).
Statistically speaking, there's a preference for light eyes (grey most predominantly). Light hair on (Caucasian) women, dark hair on men.
Modern western beauty standards dictate tanned skin for both genders, and long, straight hair on women.
A defined jawline and prominent cheekbones tend to render a person more "masculine" based on our inherent understanding of sexual dimorphism in humans and so are commonly part of the definition of masculine beauty.
A kind demeanor almost like a respectable gentleman and a charming smile.
