If u had a casual convo with a co worker about going to a staff event with that person, and then they txted to say they couldnt make it (them not coming is not the point), doesn't it mean more that they txted instead of just not showing up? I think so but i need opinions.

What are you looking for here? He cancelled and showed you courtesy and respect by texting you. This is an ACQUAINTANCE, meaning someone you barely know... everything seems pretty typical here.
