Seems like he wants you to talk more. It is rather frustrating holding the weight in all conversations while someone just sits there. I think it's his polite way of taking notice that you're quiet, saying so, but hoping you'll talk more.

I'm not like completely silent and awkward haha, I still have conversations with him which is why I'm a little confused. He said it after he made a joke and I just smiled and laughed, I guess he was expecting me to say something in return
