Why would a guy that likes me tell me he has a girlfriend?

I’ve done that before. It’s just setting boundaries. He’s respecting his relationship, but he can’t help but like you.


Sometimes you’re with someone, but you come across people that you have good chemistry with.


For example, this happened with a cute girl that was an acquaintance of mine. We clicked and got along well and she invited me back to her place. But, I declined because I had a girlfriend at the time.


If someone’s in a mediocre relationship, they are more likely to be drawn to people who get along better with them.


From that point, they might lay boundaries to stop things from escalating, they might break up with their significant other to pursue that new person, or they might cheat (which isn’t good, but it’s what some people do).

If the guy values his relationship, he will want to be loyal and hope that you respect his relationship and back off: “Oh, sorry. I didn’t know.”

If the guy does not value his relationship he may want to cheat and hope that you aren’t deterred: “That’s okay. She doesn’t need to know.”

But, if he truly wanted to cheat, he wouldn’t even have mentioned his girlfriend.

If he wants to cheat but mentions his girlfriend anyway, it probably means he’s feeling conflicted — like he knows he shouldn’t but he wants to.

Anyway, it’s best that you respect his boundary, whether it’s a strong no or a weak no, because it’s the right thing to do.
