Guy lied to me about age?

This happened a while back but I never got answers. We met in a game online, became friends, then started getting to know each other and flirting in dms. I was 21 back then (turned 22 last month) and he told me he was 26. Now, that age gap is already stretching it cause I prefer someone closer to my age, but I still gave him a chance because in the end character and chemistry is what matters most to me.

Later on however he confessed that he was actually 28. Ngl I was quite shocked, hurt, and suddenly highly uncomfortable. If I knew he was 28 to begin with I never would've gotten intimate with him. I asked him why he lied and he said that it's just 'his thing'. He claimed that he always responded with the same number even when he was my age. Basically he's saying it wasn't a big deal and it was some sort of joke or something.

I don't get it. I cut contact with him, but I still don't get it at all - was he just fooling around or is there some ill intent going on here? And if he were just joking, how does anyone find lying about age to be funny?

Simply put, he thought that he had a better chance to fornicate with you if the age gap is not too important, which, in your case, was the upper limit. Had he told the truth, then he would have missed the opportunity to copulate with you.

I experienced something like this, 1 year ago I met a boy online but we were just talking as friends and he kept telling me: I'm 17 years old

And he really looked like he was 17, like baby face , he is not so muscular
After a while he confessed and said: I'm sorry, actually I'm 27 years old. And I was shocked when I heard it, I understand you well
