Why does he behave like that?

While passing each other, he looks at me and smile and hold eye contact. I catch from him glances many times. I decided to talk to him but he was serious while talking amd wasn’t smiling.

OK, so it seems like this guy is giving you some mixed signals. A few things could possibly be going on:

- He might have a little crush on you and gets shy/nervous when you directly interact. So he smiles from afar when it's low pressure.

- But then gets self-conscious up close and tries too hard to act cool/serious instead of showing his real feelings. A lot of guys do that.

- It's possible he finds you attractive and enjoys the flirty smiles/eye contact from a distance. But hasn't fully decided if he wants to pursue anything.

- Guys can also just do stuff subconsciously sometimes and not realize their behavior isn't consistent. We aren't always in touch with our feelings.

- He may just be a generally friendly dude and you're reading into it more. Hard to say for sure!

If you're interested in finding out where he stands, I'd say try casually flirting a bit next time and see how he reacts up close. Does he seem more relaxed and smile then? Pay attention to other little signals too. And don't be afraid to make the first move if you want - what's the worst that could happen!
