I have a coworker, that when we make eye contact he shakes his head and looks down. What does that mean?

It feels like he's actively making a point to avoid looking at me/talking to me most times, other times he makes such hard eye contact at feels intense. When I smile at him and say hello and try to start a conversation, he will return the greeting, but shake his head and look down and away, keeping the conversation minimal. He looks from afar sometimes too. I can't figure out if he likes me, or is annoyed by me

Well do you do that to people you like? Prob not right? So I would take his action of looking down and shaking his head as a negative thing... for whatever reason. I can't read minds so I don't know for sure what his issue with you is but that isn't a friendly gesture that he does. Here is the saving grace... you shouldn't worry about whether he likes you or not because it is an awful idea to have any sort of romantic or relationship interest in people you work with. Most companies discourage workplace relationships and for good reason. When things go south as they often do then all hell breaks loose and disrupts work. That is at best. I wouldn't worry about this and just do the job you are paid to do.

he may be autistic, with it presenting as discomfort with eye contact. That isn't uncommon of the autistic people I've known.
