How can I understand the words and feelings behind my male friend’s texts?

So I just feel confused because his way of explaining himself isn’t that forward… sometimes I feel like he’s actually interested and sometimes I don’t… we really have a good relationship and our thoughts, morals, ideas and opinions do match a lot! Although our face to face encounters aren’t much, but when we do, we both do enjoy each other company and we always hug ( the type of hug, were you get squeezed by your partner)… though I’m not sure if he has feelings or nah…. Are there any signs that might help me to get to understand his texts better?
