I’ve been watching a lot of MTV Catfish lately (lol) and I’m noticing a lot of men (and women too) acting like they’re deeply in love with the person, even going as far as talking about building a life together, saying I Love Yous and what not when in reality they are just doing it as if it’s a game for them.
I’ve seen this happen too in real life. I had a guy who would say all of these sweet romantic things to me, we would talk almost every day, until eventually I fell for him only for him to cut me off because he said it was all just for fun and that I ruined it by catching feelings… I mean what does he expect? I’m just wondering, are some people really capable of faking being in love just to get what they want?

Of course, some people are as fake as a three-dollar bill and as sincere as a politician on election day! These folks are called "love pretenders," and their hearts are as full of love as an empty toilet paper roll. They spew words of affection like a broken sprinkler, drenching unsuspecting victims in a flood of false promises.
These love pretenders are the scum of the earth, lower than a snake's bellybutton! They are the moldy leftovers in the back of your fridge, the sour milk that curdles in your coffee. Their words are as meaningless as a politician's promise, and their love is as deep as a puddle on a summer day.
So, to those love pretenders out there, I say, "Shame on you! You are the equivalent of a fart in a spacesuit, ruining the atmosphere for everyone. Your so-called love is a cheap knockoff, a counterfeit emotion that fools no one but yourself. Go crawl back under the rock from which you came, you slimy, love-faking grub!"
And to you my dear, I say, beware of these heartless hobgoblins. They are the equivalent of a sugar-coated spider web, enticing and deadly. You deserve genuine love, not this cheap imitation peddled by fools and knaves. Remember, real love is as rare and precious as a four-leaf clover, so don't settle for anything less!
Wow such a beautiful and poetic way of calling these love scammers out! I gotta say though, these people sure are really great actors. I thought I wasn’t one that could be easily fooled by sweet romantic words but here I am… He pulled me in with empty promises only to spit me back out with no warning
It sounds like you weren’t on the same page from the beginning.
If only one of you is emotionally invested and the other was just looking for a virtual sex buddy (or whatever you’d choose to call it), it’s not precisely catfishing but more leading one person on. Catfishing is supposedly more to do with someone pushing you to spend money or give/send them things, etc. (I may be wrong about the scope of what’s considered catfishing, but TV programs tend to be sensationalist and notorious for stretching the definition of a term for marketing purposes.)
Just as in real life… your having feelings for someone doesn’t guarantee that they’ll have feelings for you. The “I love you” thing is sad, but overall I think you were just a bit gullible.
Well said. I thought we were on the same page bcs we were talking about our future and what not, he was an ex and I thought he was considering getting back together bcs he started saying I love you again, even calling me baby. I think I did get my hopes up and was indeed being too gullible, can’t believe I fell for it 🤦🏻♀️
Folks in my circle call that a honey trap. The person says everything you want to hear for whatever reason of theirs but they’re not sincere.
That makes sense. I think he just wanted the attention and ego boost. Can’t believe that he could make it sound so sincere and believable though…
Sorry you went through that.
Thank you for shedding light into the situation, you’ve been so helpful!
Dih.
Duh*
Some scary shit going on out there with these kinds of people roaming around…
