If you see someone being picked on in public, Do you intervene?

I almost got into a fight with a college kid that was showing off in front of his friends’ he was making rude comments to a guy that was overweight , the guy looked so sad , so I told the college kid to chill the fuck out , that he is being disrespectful, He told me to Go fuck myself , I then gave him a death stare and was going to drop his ass and went towards him to punch him , but his friends quickly grabbed him and pulled him back and walked away because they knew I would drop him. Why are people such assholes? , some people were laughing and some people were just standing there not saying a word. The guy thanked me for sticking up for him. I told him don’t sweat it , they are just dumb kids trying to act like they are hot shit. Do you intervene when you see someone being picked on and made fun of?

It REALLY pisses me off when I see something like that and yes, I am tempted to intervene.

I have two memorable experiences with this.

Once there was a guy and a girl outside my home by the street. They were having some kind of argument and the next thing I know the girl is screaming and the guy is punching her.

I ran outside, flew across the yard and out to the street and tackled the guy. Had him pinned down good under me down on the ground holding his wrists over his head. and was sitting on his chest.

Next thing I know the girl starts punching ME on the back from behind! I did NOT expect that. I yelled "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, I WAS TRYING TO HELP YOU!"

She yells "LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!"

So I got up off the guy. He was a bit stunned from the aggressive tackle and stayed down. I get a good look at the girl and see a black eye (which doesn't happen so fast) and other obvious signs that this isn't the first time he hit her.

Concluded that she was a masochist who wanted to get that kind of rough treatment from a guy. So I left.

Second time I was on a Subway in NYC. The train was in a station not moving with the door open. I look out the window and see a mother with her little girl maybe 8 or 10 years old and some ASSHOLE is yelling at them and intimidating them (I know he was not with them). I ran down the aisle, out through the door and across the platform to where they were. The girls were both screaming and just as I got out the door the guy takes a swing at the little girl. Ran up behind him and gave him a kick right in the back (12 years of martial arts) which took him down immediately. Held him in a choke hold until the cops came and took him away.

So yeah... I cannot STAND seeing people abused like that. It triggers something.

You are right! When you are in a major city though, people don't want to get involved. Someone could be murdering someone else right in front of them and they don't lift a finger. Fortunately, I don't work in a city anymore.

I have. I went to vote at my local middle school. I arrived just as classes were changing. In the hallway, school bully was beating on smaller kid. I stepped towards them and bully's little buddy tried to stop me. He got a look that told him I was stopping. Now I'm in my 40sat the time, I don't want to lay hands on a 13 year old, so I loudly ordered him to leave the kid alone. He replied that he knew the kid. I told him I didn't care, let him go. By this time we had attracted the attention of a male teach who intervened. I left but I heard the bully asking for "1 more chance" and the teacher says "no Johnnie, no more chances". I was bullied as a kid, it tempting to hurt the bully, but unlike him, I know it's wrong to hurt those weaker than yourself.

Otherwise hmm. It depends. I'd like to think I would. If I'm with people I know like work colleagues and they dissing someone I'll speak up. But strangers are risky. And unlikely to get the same "he's gonna drop you" vibe from me than they did from you lol. I'd like having you by my side tho 🥰

I have a lot of experience in security and self defense , I worked in that field for a lot of years , so when it comes to strangers, I usually don’t back down , when it comes to people being bullied or attacked or harmed for no reason whatsoever , my instincts is to try to de escalate the situation and not fight whatsoever, but sometimes it comes to that point , I am more of a protector than a fighter , but i will fight to defend myself if need be. I just felt bad for the guy for being bullied by punk ass college kids that deserved a good ass whooping , for being disrespectful assholes thinking they were being funny, sadly to some people they were funny , which made me shake my head even more as to why people are such assholes. It just blows my mind on how disrespectful people can be. Why this world is sooo fucked uo. Most people don’t have any dignity or respect. I understand people are judgmental, but keep that shit to yourself , but it will never change.

it depends... such intervention can bring more trouble to the victim when you disappear... so they would go against you to save themselves

I would defend a kid who is badly treated by parents or a woman who is assaulted by a man... I have done it already...

I wouldn’t like seeing another person being attacked but physically I am not strong so it might be a bit useless. Also lots of arguments that start out verbal turn into physical violence. If I see another person being verbally abused I would just tell them to walk or run away. I wouldn’t say anything to their attacker. It’s best to ignore nut cases

That’s fine as well by de escalating the situation the best way you can , yea if I knew I was going to get my ass kicked , I would just tell the person that is getting harassed to flee and ignore them as much as possible and make sure they are safe. But in my situation I had my buddy with me as well and I knew we would knock these punk ass college kids out of they tried to attack , when I gave them the death stare they pretty much shit themselves and pulled their punk ass friend away , because they knew I wasn’t messing around lol

Males are generally taller and stronger so it is safer for them to try and stop bad people. Probably the reason why most cops are male.

I have and i would, if i detected that it was more than just fair ribbing. The trick is to detect what the bully is trying to deflect from themselves. You don’t need to put your hands on someone who isn’t trying to put their hands on someone. He was highlighting someone else’s flaws to detract from his own. Figure that out and floor him with words. If you’re good, he’ll come at you and you still get to thump him. I’ve been in dozens of fights, and i’ve never thrown the first punch. People are weak and predictable.

I used to intervene when I was younger. I would do it without giving it a second thought. I would just jump in and get it to stop.
I am not very big but I can be a fighter when something is important to me like someone bullying anyone!!

I will never get involved unless I 100% believe lethal force is required & justified. Otherwise the bullied person needs to man up and protect themselves. When I was in High School I got into many fights to protect bullied people & looking back on it that was all wasted energy because they all went right back to being victim types when I wasn't around.

The shin is definitely effective , and yes it hurts like hell getting kicked in the shin , so I am not saying you are wrong on that , I’m just saying do what you gotta do to take them down , there are other effective ways as well that will mess someone up. Some of the stuff I learned in self defense works as well, but yes the shin is effective if you have a clear shot for sure 😋

Why only if you knew them? Not saying you have to fight anyone , but the right thing to do is to help someone out best way you can , whether you know someone or not. How would you feel if you were being attacked and bullied and no one else helped you , because they didn’t know you? That’s what’s wrong with this world and why it’s so fucked up.

Why people need to wake the fuck up and stop being cowards , It sadly happens all the time , I have witnessed people needing emergency assistance and people were just standing there like they had no clue what to do , like they were retarded or something , they were more concerned with their cell phones over getting the person some help , it’s shit like that , that blows my mind. You're better than I am. My one exception is if I see someone being a victim of some form of sexual violence or battery. At that point, whoever is doing it, is about to die.
