Do men “mark their territory” through hickeys and bruises during sex?

I used to date and hookup with this guy last year. He recently reached out to me again and we’ve been talking/messaging for a couple of weeks. It very quickly went back to being flirty, and last Sunday I went over to his place to hookup. He marked me up ALL OVER, to the point that I can’t cover up every mark he gave me. I didn’t even realize how many he was leaving in the moment. My friends obviously saw some of the marks because they’re too high up for my mock neck to cover and my makeup wouldn’t cover them, and they were saying that it literally looks like he was marking his territory. Is this a behavior guys actually do or are my friends just crazy?
