My husband cheated, why did he say this?

My husband cheated, when I asked him why he didn't, he says "I don't know." I explained he does know and made a conscious decision to do what he did and I wanted to know why.. he said he didn't have an answer. Pisses me off

You deserve to be pissed off. This sounds like one of those situations where the cheater not only cheats, but then they beg you to stay and can't even explain why it's a thing they had to do at all.

Humans are not rational. Analyzing them in such situations is fruitless. You'd feel better if he says "I have this inner drive to sleep with another woman, it's not something I can explain. I know I shouldn't, but doing it is fucking exhilirating"?

He likely said "I don't know" because he's either unaware of his own motivations, avoiding difficult emotions, minimizing his actions, afraid of confrontation, or overwhelmed by guilt. It doesn't excuse his behavior.
