Guys, Why a man stands up when he sees a woman?

I was raised to believe in chivalry, which includes a lot of little gestures that have, for the most part, been lost. So perhaps it's time to mention a few of them... like standing up to greet someone.

Personally, it's something I automatically do when I see an elderly person or someone I haven't seen in a while.

But men do it as a sign of respect towards a lady.

(Gents, please take it from here if you learned about this and other chivalrous/gentlemanly actions.)

I don't know about standing up when a man sees a woman. I've never known that to be a thing, at least in my generation. Seems bizarre to me and unnecessary. Really though, what's the point of it? To make them feel that we acknowledge and welcome their arrival?

I was raised in a similar manner. Our society craves more civility to each other. This is a small act (among others) that a man can show he respects a woman... and is happy to be in her company. In doing so you show respect for yourself. Its a win win.

I was also raised to practice chivalry, like opening doors for elders and females. The standing up gesture seems to have fallen out of favor.

I know! Or offering help to cross the street or get onto a bus etc. Or to stand for an elder or a pregnant woman, etc. I don't know where its' all gone.

I think there has been some objection to it, for example people saying they don't need someone to hold the door for them. I believe giving up seats on a bus for pregnant, handicapped, and elderly people still happens, but not as much as in the past.

Yes... I've seen and heard crazy women reject help -- no, reject isn't the right term for the frantic nasty meltdowns I've seen some ranting lunatics enact in the middle of the street to shame a guy into losing his manners... MANY a Mama is turning in her grave and cursing the frantic chippies for harassing their well-mannered decedents.

I was thinking maybe the ranters as their behavior may be the result of a lack of love. lol

They're the types who won't let you hold the door for them... you think they won't scream bloody murder at being touched at any level? Ooof.

The balance of chivalry and respect is difficult to maintain. Some women appreciate the kind small acts, and sometimes they don't like it.

I like it. I just question this very old fashioned one that literally only the best mannered guys use. Perhaps he took a class or something.

Its just something us older guys do as a sign of respect. But the age of chivalry is dying unfortunately

You've got about 8 years up on him. I'm thinking he asked an older friend how to be respectful or something. He's dusting off his best Sunday manners (which he doesn't typically use on Sundays).
