What is the meaning of “you look fine” when videochatting?

I was chatting by text with a guy and then we started videochatting, I felt I was looking bad because I didn’t have time to apply make up or do my hair so I felt I wasn’t looking good enough and I said this while looking at the cam lol and he said: “You look fine” I didn’t think much about it until I remembered that he always said I looked beautiful in the photos of my profile. What is the meaning of”you look fine” in this context?

Haha, you're overthinking it I feel, there isn't really any layered meaning behind this. You were clearly not happy with the way you looked and you were articulating it to him as well. I feel like "you look fine" is generally a good response when someone is critiquing their appearance in this manner.

Think about it this way, if he had said "Noo, you look gorgeous" or "You look amazing" it would come off as inauthentic or ingenuine to you would it not; given that you believe that you weren't looking your best at that point in time? However, saying that you look fine does not come off as overcompensatory and conveys his thoughts without seeming insincere. It does not mean he doesn't think you're beautiful.

He meant exactly what he said: "You look fine." Most guys tell a woman she looks fine when she's thinking she looks awful. And he knew you didn't like the way you looked so he was just trying to assure you that you didn't look bad.

There is no underlying meaning in it, nothing deeper to interpret from it. You're overthinking something very basic.
