Usually it means he’s hoping feelings will change.

Sometimes a guy stays in the “best friend” role because he values the connection and doesn’t want to lose access, even if he wants more.

Other times, he’s quietly waiting for timing, a breakup, or a shift in her feelings.

The risk is that it can turn into silent resentment if he’s not honest with himself.

Being close to someone while wanting more and knowing it’s not mutual can slowly blur boundaries.

At that point, he has to decide whether he truly accepts just friendship, or if he’s staying for potential.
