Why does my boyfriend say “maybe” instead of just telling me no?

My boyfriend’s job may be shutting down, and I’m worried I’ll have to quit school to help financially. I asked him if he’d go with me to a day-job place tomorrow to work.
His response? “Maybe.”

Because right now you said it may shut down. You didn’t say it was shutting down for sure. So he doesn’t want to commit to something just yet until he knows what’s really going on. So depending on what happens tomorrow it’s a maybe that he may go w you. Why would you need to quit school to help finically? Take a part-time job, a lot of people do that.
