I think a men view their cars as a direct link to their masculinity (or at least his outward perception). Personally, I have a huge things for modified chevy trucks. I'd never buy one for myself, but I love driving my male friends' around. It makes me feel safe and protected. I feel very girly in it. But I'd never not date a guy if he drove something else. It's just a fave of mine. If a guy takes good car of his car/truck (puts money into it, keeps it clean, and takes pride in it), it's usually a good indicator that he'll take care of his girlfriend as well. However, there are some guys that go WAY overboard and neglect their ladies (Shania Twain once sang a song about it!).
It's similar to girls and their physical appearances. Guys judge each other on their cars. And sadly some girls are VERY superficial. It'll catch up with them one day...

I love working on and fixing up cars... to me its a passion and a hobby and just something I love doing. I don't do it to impress or show up anybody else, I do it for me... I don't expect people to think I'm cool or whatever people have in their heads about people who are obsessed with cars. I know some of them are like that but for me its just like if a person loves to knit or play basketball- its what I do. I have a motorcycle too I work on, and I take the car and bike to shows. But I know what you mean when you say guys use it for social reasons and whatnot, because a lot of them do and it kind of ruins the sport of having this hobby.
Yeh I don't get guys' obsessions with cars-it's weird. A car is a car as far as I'm concerned. The other day I walked past a sports car that was parked up at the side of the road and the guys actually got down and lied on the floor to look underneath it! I was like wtf?! it's just a car, then everyone was taking pics of it lol very strange.
Most guys take some kind of pride in their cars. I bought my first car brand new for a couple reasons, A, I like the car itself, B, I do a lot of driving so I'd be better off buying new because it's more reliable, and C, I did kind of want to show up all the other young guys out there who put $10,000 rims on their 1993 Honda Civic 4 door.
I am a car guy, I like cars and I'd love to own a really exotic car some day, but "obsessed" is not the correct word to use, it's more of a fascination if you ask me.
In case you're wondering, my car is a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer, and no, I don't try to turn it into a car from the "Fast and the Furious" like most other young guys do.
BMW's are great cars, she had good taste! :)
All joking aside, yes, dating someone just for their material possessions is shallow.
The reason why a lot of guys are interested in cars is because we are competitive. Cars are status symbols, which is one form of competition. Another is speed. How fast can your car go? We boys like things that go vroooooomm.
Guys also like to tinker and explore and modify stuff. After a long day in school, playing with our cars is a great stress buster. Also, if you know what you're doing, you can save a lot of money over taking your car to the mechanic if something goes wrong.
It starts with Hot Wheels, but never ends. :)

Ok, here's my two cents. There are multiple reasons people get into cars, and all of them are very different reasons. But let's first state that many women are into cars as well, and for the same reasons.
1. The first group, which is probably most of the guys at your school, are people who obsessed with status. These are not "car guys", you will see just as much obsession with their clothes, partners, and activities. They buy nice cars to show status. Most of them can't drive. Their obsession is more image than the car itself.
2. The next group is the macho competitive type that wants to race everyone and will spend insane amounts of money to make their car the fastest so they can always have the bragging rights of being on top. These are the people that do intersection takeovers, fly down residential roads, and Rev up at every light trying to race grandma in her Buick Regal. They are the one's who trade up cars every year always trying to have the fastest. Their obsession is more competition and image than the car itself.
3. Now for the last group. This is the group that is actually obsessed with cars. They breathe mechanics and engines. These guys will find the car they love, no matter the condition, and give all their time to bring it back to life. They don't care what others think. They will drive a rusted, dented, beaten car for years while they build it. They make it their own way. They don't care if it's the fastest, or the loudest. Just that it is theirs and they built it with their own two hands. They will devote years to that one car and know every detail and every spec. They can't even go to the store without looking at every car he passes wondering which engine option they went with, what tires are they running, does the stance look right. Hearing problems on other cars while sitting at a light. Pulling off the road to check out someone else's build and comparing the love and detail put into eachothers work. These are real car people. These people are actually obsessed with the car.
To be clear, avoid car guys. We know how to devote a lot of time, money, and love into a relationship. Unfortunately for y'all, it's all spent on the relationship with the car.Thing is, men are idealistic creatures. They love objects, new inventions, and exploring places. Cars appeal to them due to their idealistic status. Women will never truly understand men's obsessions with cars because they are opportunistic beings, meaning females love people more than objects.
With that said, not all women are opportunistic and not all males are idealistic.
Take me as an example, a high school boyo! I've never had a kink for cars.
And I don't care what car I really drive as long as it looks fresh.I work in a place where everyone drives a BMW. Cars are way more iconic. I mean come on, girls love fast cars. But I think its something else if you work on them. Like a friend of mine was restoring a pretty old car and I like to help him out. I really like building things and essentially creating beauty than actually "owning" it. I think its something you have to take into account on each man.
Yeah it's a social status thing. I'm one of the rare few guys who didn't really give a damn about cars. As long as I had something that would take me from point A to point B (and sometimes to point Z), and looked decent enough, I was straight. But some dudes go all out with their cars. Gotta give 'em credit for being passionate about something, I guess...
Because they go vroom vroom!
Nah, but joking aside..
We like to take care of something that is 'manly'. A car is a manly thing, and we like to keep it working, etc. We also like speed, and cars go fast.
We can also show it off to our friends. The better the car is the better the man is...right? Lol, that's how we think of it.
Why are girls obsessed with shoes? You have 2 feet, 7 days of the week, and you have 80 pairs of shoes... Yeah, obsession at it's best XD-The sensation of freedom and velocity it's just AWESOME
-Most engines have a great sound, and it's music to our ears.
-Most of us like mechanics (as me, for example), and cars are perfect for this purpose.
And yes, some people buy cars considered cool just for social status, but the guy that really like cars never do this.Guys just want to brag about their cars to boost their egos and compare themselves and compete with other guys. It shows how materialistic society has become.
I don't know if it really has to do with gender. :\
I don't care about cars at all, and I know multiple girls who are, like, mildly obsessed with them.
