Does repeating something over and over make you believe?

I was told that if you say something over and over that you would believe it yourself. I want to know if it is true or not.

Yes, it does happen. I was taught this in my social psychology class.

Ramble but still relevant: That is why negative mindsets are convincing, even if they are irrational. It's a positive feedback loop-- the more negative thoughts you have, the worst you feel, which produces more negative thoughts, keeping your brain stuck on a certain neuronal path. Positive thinking takes so much work because it rewires the brain to an extent, and you have to actively change your thoughts. Also, your mind and thoughts are regarded by yourself, which is a highly subjective environment for those thoughts. Logic won't always stand here.

Sort of. If you tell yourself the sky is green over and over again, you probably—I haven't tested this, so I can't say for sure—will not start to actually believe the sky is green.

However, if you tell yourself that you're happy with something about yourself, or that doing some specific action is bad, you can actually alter your mindset after a little. It isn't a complete and sudden change, but the frequent repetition set it in your mind and will start to influence how you think about those subjects.

So, basically, it works on subjects that are of your perception of something.

Not exactly, but I have read before that words have a much more powerful effect on our moods than we think. For instance, if every day someone asks you how your day is, and you say, "Crappy," then your attitude will follow. But even if your day is going badly and you make yourself tell people, "It's going great," it will help toward changing how you truly feel, and you will be more positive as a result.

I don't think it would work if you kept repeating to yourself every minute, "The sky is red, the sky is red, the sky is red."

Yes. First of all, if you are in denial, and you tell yourself something false repeatedly, you believe in it, and you still believe in it despite evidence to the contrary.

Second, if you believe in something that you want to strive for, let's say getting an A on a test, and you keep on telling yourself you can do it, your motivation may cause your success, or you steadily work out ways to make your dreams come true.

So if you want to do something, all you have to do is believe!

If you know that you are telling yourself something in particular, then all that you accomplish is that you've memorized some line or thought and are well aware that it's something you tried tricking yourself into thinking you didn't know before but now you do.

In short: it won't work unless the two halves of your brain aren't connected.

In a way I believe it. Its like the more I believe I'm gonna win at something its 75% gonna happen. Then there's my friend who's always has or is having panic attacks, because he's always thinking about them. So yes I do believe it.
