Why are euphemisms like "courageous", "heroic" and "strong" applied to people with cancer?

Probably because they have to go through multiple surgeries, chemo, radiation, etc. Sometimes they enter clinical trials that aren't proven... I know what you saying, they are sick and pretty much anyone in that situation would want to live. The thing is they have to keep going through shitty situations over and over and not give up. It's not the worst thing in the world to give some encouragement to people that are fighting for their life. Having a positive attitude can help the recovery process.

You said it yourself.. they're euphemisms and we use them to hopefully give patients a positive outlook with the condition they are in. There are people out there who can only think of death when it comes to cancer. A small hint of support is better than calling them a victim, as technical as it may be.
