+1 yif they have a history of it and/or it's under control, then sure. but i think it really depends what the illness is. i have panic disorder and have been going to therapy for a year and am on a low dose of meds and it's a LOT better. but something like bipolar or borderline sounds risky. bipolar can be controlled with meds. borderline, eh not so much. if someone has a history of borderline and went through treatment, fine. if they currently have it? that sounds like a recipe for disaster. women with borderline (and men but it's mostly women) can make extremely reckless impulsive decisions. that's not really someone i would want in office. same goes for narcissistic personality disorder (mostly men - it's like the male variant of BPD). it just sounds like it could be very destructive. but things like depression and such i think would be fine. i would be more worried about the personality disorders haha

ah i'm sorry girl, it's no fun :( do you see a therapist?
- +1 y
Yeah, do you?
- +1 y
yes ma'am
- +1 y
Same here. Where you born with it or was it induced by a life event?
- +1 y
thanks for MH :) I haven't had it forever but I am not sure if it was necessarily induced by something or just took a while to come out. I was always an anxious perfectionist type of kid so it was probably a combination of nature and nurture haha what about you?

Violent sexual assault :(
He said he wouldn't hurt me if I didn't fight back so I just grit my teeth and let him have his way with me. But afterward he beat me so badly that I couldn't even walk and threw me outside in the cold :'( - +1 y
omg that is so terrible I am so sorry you went through that :'( <3
- +1 y
Yeah, thankfully my brother took care of me afterward otherwise I would have had a complete breakdown.

+1 yDepends on the mental illness. I have mental illnesses so I know the challenges, but I also know what I've overcome in my years of learning how to deal with them. Everyone is different and not every mental illness rules your life forever and debilitates you.

OCD would probably be an advantage.
Narcissism is probably essential, because someone who did not have some degree of that personality trait would probably have difficulty coping with the rough and tumble of politics.

Most of the nation would probably be willing to vote for a transgender candidate yet they apparently see nothing odd about that, so is a different mental illness really any worse?00 Reply

+1 yautism is a spectrum disorders so it'd depend on the severity, OCD will completely consume the persons life so they won't be fit for ruling a country, bipolar disorder you can take drugs for so that wouldn't be too much of a problem and bpd would be to much of a problem bc stress = psychotic episodes

+1 yWell, Franklin Delano Roosevelt had polio, and he had to keep it masked so that people would take him seriously. That's sad to me that he had to keep it a secret for fear that he wouldn't be taken seriously. Your mental state of physical state shouldn't decide whether or not you would be a strong leader of a country.

+1 yI think I would... It'd probably make me identify with them more, to be honest. As long as they were receiving treatment for it, then it wouldn't affect how I saw them, I guess the same way as if they had a prosthetic limb.
00 Reply It depends on the kind of disorder or treatment. I'm sure there have been lots of sociopathic presidents. They're usually successful.
There's no issue if the disorder is under control. Most people will be able to live a normal life.00 Reply367 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I voted yes, but it depends. Does he have it under control? Does is affect his ability to preside? Is it something that happened in the past or recent? Is he best than the rest of candidates?
00 ReplyPresident needs to make vital decisions. It maybe very unfair and mental illness does have stigma. But president has to be on guard 24/7, these decisions are vital, and could even be matter of life and death.
00 ReplyNo. The job is too important to entertain the idea that a person with a mental illness could hold the most powerful position in the country.
10 ReplyThat doesn't affect their ability to do their job well. Anyone who thinks so has clearly never dealt with mental illness. 😂😂😂

Lincoln was contemporaneously described as suffering from "melancholy," a condition which modern mental health professionals would characterize as clinical depression.[32]
Lincoln suffered depression and hence avoided carrying sharp things, such as a knife, fearing he would use it on himself.

Nope.. not even close. President has a huge responsibility and war powers.. would never happen. We can't just feel sympathetic like that and make deal like that. Someone who is mentally unstable is not in in any way shape or form capable of handling a position
