Depression easily. The fact that this is even a question is ridiculous. Most people likely suffer from some form of undiagnosed depression yet they manage to get on with their daily lives. It is called masculinity. Addiction on the other hand causes you to lose your job, drop out of school, and become an unproductive member of society whose life goes down the drain. At least you can be functional when you are depressed.

Masculinity is being able to deal with your emotions and remain functional even when things have gone to hell.

They're often "co-morbid", i. e. people who are addicts are depressed and people who are severely depressed become addicts. They both seem equally bad to me. Anyone who thinks depression can't affect your life as much as addiction has never experienced serious depression, or even known someone with it.

Depression and substance abuse are dual diagnosed in many cases. Many people start abusing a substance when they're severely depressed. Many people get depressed when they abuse a substance.

They can lead to each other. They often do in severe cases.

I have depression so I would rather have an addiction. Addictions can be healed, my depression can't.

A lot of people with addiction have both. That's how they got their addiction. Majority anyway, don't think all.

Because I have it and it's something that I can deal with (with the help of certain people). On the other hand, I've seen people close to me (family members) who are addicted to both drugs and alcohol, and I felt like that was a harder situation to deal with than mine.
