This is an issue I've always been conflicted with. I believe that in America, everything that you do to yourself should be legal. As long as no one else is affected, I don't care. Your body, your life, your choice. But with smoking, it kinda does affect other people. My dad smokes and it really upsets me. I also know some people believe second hand smoke can give you cancer (don't know if that was proven to be true or not,) and I know that animals are twice as likely to get cancer if their owner smokes. Also, if lots of people get cancer, insurance rates will go up. But it seems like the majority of people in this country will deal with cancer at some part in their lives whether they smoked or not. So should we not use microwaves, cell phones, or drive cars because we're afraid of getting cancer? I don't know. I voted not to ban for the reason stated, and the economy would take a major loss if we lost the taxes cigarettes produce. I mean, it's not like people don't know the risks of smoking. It's been shoved down our throats for years now. If they were still being called healthy, I would say ban them this second. But people know the risks and it's their choice.
By the same logic we e should ban anything unhealthy.
Say sugary and fatty foods and alcoholic drinks. What about activities like boxing and football? Fireworks motorcycles. Extreme sports. Maybe we should require that all fetuses be screened for genetic defects and aborted for certain kinds of issues. Maybe we shouldn't pay for preventative health care for the elderly because they are just going to die anyway.
The list goes on and on and its a slippery slope.
I hate smoking. Its nasty but i dont like the idea of the government regulating what i can a d can't do
Nope. If people wanna fuck up their bodies, that is THEIR choice. The only time the government has a right to step in and do something is when smokers jeapordize the health and safety of other individuals around them (ie: second-hand smoke). That's exactly why the law was passed to no longer permit smoking outside of certain zones.
I know but then smokers smoke in no smoke zones anyway that's what annoys me and when in the car some smokers think that if they blow the smoke out the window their child isn't affected. Smoking affects everyone even those who don't smoke why do you have to get cancer and or other cardio dieases because the person next to you decided to be a smoker?
Then they should be fined for smoking in no-smoking zones.
Prohibition only leads to criminality. You can not dictate morality or other personal choices in a free society. If someone wants to smoke they are going to smoke. Are you truly prepared to incarcerate, at extreme expense, smokers? Because cravings don't go away, people don't change.

Regulations on the chemical makeup of cigarettes is a better idea. More people will just start to roll their own cigarettes if there's a ban. Look at weed.
Interesting idea yea
you can t ban cigarettes just like magic lol
you ll make a lot of people loose their job and ruin the economy
plus you ll increase illegal trafficking which is much worse and out of your control.
what you can do is raise the price of the goods hence the demand will reduce
and mention the risks
but they re already doing that
try banning coca and fast food too
I'm all for the ban. However cigarettes is a multi-billion dollar business and has been killling people for centuries. All countries will turn a blind eye to all the risks and studies as long as the money keep filling up everyone's pockets.
Never gonna happen because it's an industry and lots of money is made. It's America and the more money, the better, despite the horrific side effects.
At least they are trying to ban smoking near children cause second hand smoke can kill.
I don't even smoke and ai think this is stupid.
Smoking is "LINKED" to cancer.
Smoking does not "CAUSE" cancer.
Science has proven a link between smoking being a is a contributer but not the cause of cancer. We ALL have cancerous cells in our body at this very moment, just whether or not those cells become a form of life threatening "cancer."
I agree ban ciggs but too much money is being made through this industry and that will never happen, for the men out there smoking and erectile dysfunction has been linked to smoking besides cancer so just throwing that out there.
No, if people want to smoke it's their choice, the goverment should stop trying to control everyone so much. And if people want to smoke they will, even if it's illegal. Though perhaps if weed was legalized at the same time many smokers would switch to weed which is a much healthier alternative
It's not just their choice anymore because if you're standing somewhere and a smoker approaches you to light up, your health is now at risk. Are you ok with it? Interesting point about weed alternative also.
Second hand smoke is rarely a problem, especially since it's banned in most closed public spaces. The fumes from cars and such play a much bigger role. People seem to think that if you take one sniff of someone's smoke you're gonna have health problems.. Smokers smoke multiple cigarettes a day for years getting all the smoke directly, a bit of second hand smoke once in a while won't do anything. Banning cigarettes for second hand smoke is like banning sex in case your neighbours have noisy sex and you can't sleep
Yes.! Ban them.. people would use it lesser when they wouldn't be able to get it so easily
My big problem with cigarettes is that they affect people around smokers as well... passive smoking is just as dangerous.. alcohol on the other hand only affects the person who's drinking it
I hate cigarettes, but people should be free to smoke. Ban them in private places, that I will agree on.
No. Or let's also ban alcohol and lower things like liver disease. And every single junk food to lower diabetes. And cars to lower deaths caused by pollution. The list is endless.
I say don't ban them. I would never smoke but I want the people who are inclined to do so to kill themselves off. The government should not ban or restrict anything people can consume.
Survival of the fittest.
As long as they tax cigarettes really high and goes to cover the medical problems they will likely face then I say it's fine it's legal.
Cause if we just ban something it'll go away, like marijuana did
No it won't go away but it's not going to be as easy to get your hands on as before. DaddyRollingStone smoking doesn't just affect the smoker it affects you too.
None of my friends or close family smoke, so not really.
People will just use smokeless tobaccco
ban cigarettes, im sure if cigarettes cause impotency every guy would quit smoking, although smoking does cause impotency but it never has been proved
I'm all for the ban but honestly now really think about it. Would that work?
Vaping is the only solution #clouds
They say vaping is even worse compared to cigarettes weird huh?
Who says that? Facts are totally wrong, how can 7000 chemicals be better for you than vaping? Main ingredient being vg and a small amount of liquid nicotine not harmful in such low mixtures.
cigarettes are cancer.
inb4alcohol is far far worse
Research says red wine is good for you. They've also created non-alcholic beer haha funny. Cigarettes on the other hand...
Research says nicotine is good for you. Turns out many things are in appropriate amounts. Both substances require prolonged misuse.
Not that anyone cares. This isn't about health policy.
People aren't legally obligated to be healthy.
DONT TOUCH MY CIGARETTES
Quit banning stuff.
Cries. People are dying LordBlakeh don't you care for your own?
@_Just_A_girl_ In moderation it doesn't kill you, and it's their choice if they want to smoke.
Yes ban them
