Banning things does not work. Remember Prohibition, the War on Drugs, and forbidding premarital sex.
Banned things have an alure that nothing exceeds. Make anything forbidden and that's what many people, especially impressible and rebellious youth.
Education has done a lot to reduce alcohol abuse, drug addiction, and teen pregnancy. Education (not propaganda or brainwashing or "because I said so') works. Nothing else I know of works nearly as well.
If we were to ban tobacco sales, we'd lose tax revenue for one thing, though most importantly we would drive the tobacco industry underground, and then there would be even less regulation to keep the 'product' uncontaminated with lethal mixtures of pesticides and other things.
No. States are losing out on the taxes when they do stupid things like that. For example: Massachusetts has banned all flavored cigarettes, including menthol, in the entire state. Guess what, all the menthol smokers, plus the non-menthol smokers, go to New Hampshire to buy their cigarettes and it's 25-30% cheaper too. Or some, like we do when we can, travel to Virginia where cigarettes are 50% cheaper. it'll just be same as when Prohibition was around. People will find a way to get what they want.
Over 480,000 people a year die from smoking cigarettes. 41,000 from second hand smoking in the us alone.
So yeah that's a lot of deaths from something not needed to survive.
Bans never turn out well. People take offense at being told what to do, always have.

What happened to "My Body, My Choice?"
While I think cigarettes are terrible, you have the right to pursue happiness, and if you're ever to achieve it, you must have the capacity to fail to achieve it as well, or it has no value, you can't actually achieve happiness if you're following the only allowed path. Ban them in public, sure, just like we ban public drunkenness. But stop dictating to others what they can and can't do with their own bodies if they aren't causing harm to others, and I don't mean some nebulous philosophical harm that can only be observed through statistical analysis, I mean actual direct causal harm.
At this point, there's no need. I can't even remember the last time I saw someone smoking tobacco. Public information and sky high taxation did the trick already.
The really strange thing is how many people seem to thing smoking weed is better somehow (healthy even) - I guess that's down to the association with all the other New Age Mysticism bollocks that has been spreading since the sixties...
I used to not care so much till I delved into how it's grown and picked. Even in the USA we have undocumented minors being used as virtual slave labor. They're exposed to harsh chemicals killing them very young, giving them tumors, making them sterile, etc, etc. It's a way for Big Tobacco to exploit desperate people and young children. It's wicked af. Big Tobacco must be stopped.
By now, everyone knows thar smoking is dangerous. We knew it was dangerous back when I was a kid. Well, there are lots of things which are dangerous, and people make their own choices. If you decide to smoke, get yourself hooked on nicotine and spend the rest of your life as a slave to the tobacco industry, you made your choice. Live with it... or die with it.
I don’t think it should be banned just like I don’t think alcohol should be banned, people have a right to buy and sell products such as this and to limit that right would start to limit freedom of buying and selling. For example lets say the government banned sugar, yes sugar can be harmful and can hurt you, but why doesn’t it ban sugar than? Because it needs to keep the free market up
No human being has the right to tell another human being what the hell they can do okay then you give me the second hand smoke argument fuck that shit I want to smoke a cigarette in my house under the blanket with all the lights off I should be able to fucking do it
No, obesity is killing more people than cigarettes. If you want to ban cigarettes then you need to ban fast food and dessert. People can drink gas if they want to, leave them alone to enjoy themselves at their own risk. It's not like they are smoking with no idea that this is bad for you
Yes, I would support that. It harms a lot of people.
No, banning tobacco would just move it underground, just like what liquor did during prohibition. Instead, make it expensive and provide incentives to stop smoking.
yea i could get cancer from 2nd hand smoke
its not like soda or sugar that is fine or even helpful in small doses. cigarettes are bad for you 100% of the time
Like Cuban cigars were during the embargo that really worked out well the only difference is that my uncle had something to waste 60 bucks a cigar on for his humidor addiction.
It'll be met with a ton of resistance. But no tobacco means a lot of gas station customers would be less filthy and erratic.
I fully support banning all mind and body altering chemicals! Of course, allowing prescribed medicine. I do not believe marijuana should be allowed.
How did we go from 'legalize weed, cuz I just wanna do it' to 'ban shit I don't like and have no affect on me less I chose to consume them myself'.
People should have the right to kill themselves if they want.
The governments have banned products that where a lot less harmful then tobacco.
Only because they make too much money off of tobacco products smh
It depends where in public. If your talking about family friendly places like parks, schools and supermarket stores, then yes.
No more sales.
Enough banning and mandates! Actually this could work out.. Smokes banned, prices plummet, and then I could buy them with no tax!
Can we just split society into two groups? Those that want to be coddled like fking children, and actual adults?
It is not the government’s job to protect you from yourself.
What gives anyone else the right to ban someone from buying tobacco? Adults can do whatever they want. How about banning promiscuous sex, that's more harmful to more people.
Promiscuous sex is more harmful to more people? 😂
Really causes a lot of deaths
I say legal if alcohol and pot are legal
Yes.
Nope
