Does a fan blowing directly at your face cause your skin to dry out?

i've been trying to avoid using the ac because it's bad for skin so i have this fan blowing on me but is it drying me out? i have moisturizing toner and cream on (i apply it immediately after i get out of the shower).

it's a bit humid in here but nowhere near as humid as when you're walking around outside because we're in a high rise i guess. i keep the windows open so it's just regular air being blown at my face.

i'm wondering if i should wear a thicker cream or avoid facing the fan.

Scientifically yes it will. Do the bodies defence mechanism. Wind on your face will chase the blood flow to increase. this is doing 2 things one acting like a radiator in your car taking the heat from the engine leatig the wind cool the water running through it then back to the engine cooler. Thus the engine running MRE efficiently.
Secondly. Is the or temp is very fold then this works n reverse taking war blood to the exposed skin earea stopping it from freezing and getting frost bite. this is why your face goes red when we are cold its the blood rushing to the skin surface.
What happens if you sit with fan blowing on your face due to it being hot. The body uses its next cooling aid sweet when we sweat the at iion of evaporating causes latent body heat to be dispersed.
Now adding a fan to this equation increases the evaporation to the point that we don't appear to sweat at all hense us feeling. Cool like hanging washing out on a windy day. Most people think you need heat to dry way it help's but the key factor is wind or air flow.
So finally to answer your question yes it will dry your face out as some of a he essential oils will evaporate too.
However the modermoderrn female trend of lots of make up will act as barrier cream stopping to much evaporation.. I don't agree with this becuase I'd all was advocate minimal makes up to allow the skin to breath naturally.
The upshot sit by your fan but double the intake of water to replace the evaporated sweat.

i usually don't wear makeup just sunblock but you have to admit they are kinda the same, they form a barrier on top of the skin. when i'm at home i never have makeup or sunblock on. i also should mention that i never sweat from my face apart from this small area below my lower lip. i see lots of men and women here in japan sweating profusely from their face and sopping it up with handkerchiefs but luckily? i am half caucasian so i don't have that problem in the same conditions. however i do sweat a lot in the underarm area! interesting about the essential oils evaporating. i didn't know oils evaporate!

Hi coco its minute molecules of oil that are with your sweat. they come out in the sweat then it floats off. like when you blow bubbles the colourful blues pinks and purples are oils.

@abundantlyrich the moment you come in from a bitterly cold wind and after being out side in it for 1/2 hour or more your check will flush. this is the red face I refer too. Flushed cheeks when you come in from the outside.

It depends it can cause dry skin, depending on the weather, how fast the fan is blowing at you, how long, and your genetics. If your say in really hot weather and your blowing that fan at yourself at high mode for even like 30 minutes then no. Even if you did this in fair weather. This is where genes can cause a play some people are more sensitive to the cold and can get dry skin that way others are more sensitive to the heat and get dry skin that way. Some other diseases can cause dry skin like I know I have a bit of a thyroid problem nothing unstable its just the antigens that are a bit high, but even that can sometimes cause symptoms like dry skin other diseases as well. In your case though I think it could be the showers you are taking causing your dry skin, do you take hot showers or moderately hot showers?

Not dry your skin out, but continous exposure for a long amount of time could make the parts of your body constantly getting directly Wind to lose feeling. This often happens to truckers etc who work on the road who always drive with their Windows down. They lose feeling on one side of their faces and arms from years of getting strong Wind only at one side of the body for hours a day

Yep. Think of the moisture around you like a gradient. There is more moisture and it gets less and less the farther away from you. The more moisture there is near you, the less that can evaporate off your skin.

When you add a fan, it disrupts the gradient and makes it easier for water to evaporate which helps cool you down. This dries you out faster.

That's why the weather channel has what it feels like vs what the actually temperature is. Hotels and large hospitality companies devote a lot of money to researching how to make people feel more comfortable in the cheapest way possible. It's not just about AC it's also about humidity and air movement. There are a lot of factors in controlling how the environment feels.

i see :o so should avoid letting the air blow on my face and just let it blow on my body? i like to sleep with it blowing on me but my boyfriend doesn't like it because he says it's cold but it doesn't feel cold to me.

You could also try to increase how much water you drink. You're drying out and so drinking more will let you keep the fan on and not dry out your skin. I always feel like my skin is made out of paper if I don't drink enough water.

that's so true. thanks for reminding me.
i try to drink 2.5L a day but it's hard to stay hydrated and still get good sleep during the night (when i use the fan the most) because it's hard to go back to sleep after getting up to pee :/

Every air flow will help humidity to vaporize. So a fan on your skin, will remove water.

Don't worry. I put the fan over my bed on high and sleep naked and I couldn't get my skin to dry out after two weeks. I finally had to take a bath everyday in rubbing alcohol and after two weeks my skin finally dried out enough to peel it all off. They don't make fans like they used to.

I think it's physics: dry air can absorb a lot of moisture, especially when it's warm. So blowing dry air over your skin, on a hot summer day, will have some drying effect on your skin.
However, if overall the air is sufficently humid, even without the cream, you'd probably be fine.
It's more in the dry, cold air in the winter (cold air can contain little moisture) that your skin will dry out :o

What does a/c do to your skin? I've never heard of anything like this before? Worrying too much I think. Even if they do dry your skin a little, just moisturize more often. I personally would rather have a little dry skin then be uncomfortably hot. I hate humidity and that is definitely not good for our bodies in many ways.

Not necessarily, only if its blowing around dry air, i sleep with a fan directly on me all night and through out the day because it gets stupid hot in arizona, i haven't noticed my sking drier then normal, usually dry skin has a underlying conditikn whether from genetics, to a skin condition to lack of a certain vitamin. Psoriasis can cause dry scaley skin although not as common to have, lack of vitamins and types of shampoo and soap can really dry out your skin.

I think the fan is worse than the actual AC because it is directing an artificial air current in your face.
