There's many forms of cancer, which are associated with various things. There's many causes.

My father had Oesophageal cancer, he never smoked or drank alcohol. He lived a healthy lifestyle.

He suffered from acid on his stomach for years which gradually, over time it "burnt" his oesophagus. In time, this caused his Cancer

He went through a huge 12 hour operation. His oesophagus was removed and part of his stomach was stretched up to replace the oesophagus. The operation was a massive risk, but due to him living a healthy lifestyle, being tea- total and life long non smoker they have him a 90% chance of survival during the operation.

One poor guy wasn't healthy enough to go through such major surgery due to being a smoker , his internal organs were badly damaged due to smoking , so he was told he was terminally. He'd have very little chance of surviving the operation.
