+1 yYes! They are probably doing more harm that good. If you are going to force feed someone, at least make it something they are willing to eat.
Don't tell me it's to build them up, either. There are plenty of nutricious vegan foods available. I'm practically vegan and eat a balanced diet, so I certainly don't need building up.
The problem is more likely to be that the staff have no idea about veganism and don't know how to prepare vegan food... or the just can't be bothered.01 Reply- +1 y

+1 yI do not actually,
Anorexia is a VERY serious thing and the fact is that the the redditor was forced to choose between veganism or not dying because of an eating disorder,
Anorexia is so bad I'd actually advise that person to just drop any lifestyle like veganism till they are out of recovery which generally at least 7-10 years213 Reply- +1 y
But you can put on weight on a vegan diet without meat and you might scare the person away from seeking help again.
- +1 y
its more than putting on weight, its getting the proper nutrients, its the proper calories, its the proper vitamins.
At that point, veganism is hurting that person.
Its the reason they force feed anorexics, because they'll use ANY excuse to avoid eating. Due to this, many western country's allow the force feeding via feeding tube of people who are in danger of death from eating disorders and if this person has been committed, then thats whats going on.
Jxpxtxr once told me that when she was in a Clinic for an Eating disorder the person in the room next to her, was so resistent and ended up avoiding force feeding and the staff told her and the other patients that she 'left' when everyone saw that she was getting thinner and thinner and weaker and they all knew that that teenage girl had died the night before - +1 y
People who are anorexic have issues with food and for some people being vegan helps to deal with the guilt or generally uneasiness associated with food and it has no side effects.
For all we know she was vegan way before she was anorexic as well. Either way denying her vegan food isn't making her eat more - +1 y

Nuts are also high in calories and nutrition.
- +1 y
They can also make you throw up if you eat them in the kind of numbers an anorexic patient would require
- +1 y
Meat would make you throw up first because nuts are more calorie-dense.
- +1 y
Other than protein meat is not really high in nutrients. Not in comparison to grains or fruits/vegetables anyway. Maybe in comparison to chocolate but , well...
It's also very difficult to be deficient in protein while getting enough calories. You'd have to basically eat just oil.
People do eat vegan and are healthy so clearly it's not needed. There are other foods high in calories and nutrients and I don't see denying someone who is anorexic the type of food they want to eat is productive at all? - +1 y
not like that, literally, nuts have certain things in them that can make you throw up
- +1 y
If you have a reaction to them they can, but vegans have similar reactions to meat if they didn't eat it for a long time.
- +1 y
Not at all, I LOVE almonds and I found out that hard way that yeah, you eat a cereal bowl full of plain almonds and you will infact feel sick to your stomach
- +1 y
eat a cereal bowl of Beef Stew or Jambalaya and you just get a tasty meal
- +1 y
but if you space it out when you eat the almonds you won't get sick and even small ammounts of meat can make vegans sick.
No, from the opinion of a vegetarian who made the choice to be one at 3yrs old, I believe that the hospital/feeding clinics should do everything they can to help the individual become nourished without meat and with other alternatives because you can have a balanced diet without me. But if nothing is working, or the individual is so impoverished and eating meat is the only way they can get their needed nutrients fast and efficiently enough, then I say yes.

I think as long as they are willing to eat enough calories the hospital should try to accommodate.
I'm sure they have like gluten free or dairy free option for people who are allergic. It's not like it's a hard thing to do, like the post said, they had pasta and steak and vegetables. Clearly the steak is a no go but the only thing that made the pasta a no go is the cheese sauce. She could have just had the pasta and just put on some oil10 Reply

+1 yA mental hospital exists to cater to what you need, not what you want. If you need to eat meat, then you have to eat meat.

I disagree. The hospital is there to provide a cure. Not make matters worse by enforcing meat eating and causing longer term psychological damage.
- +1 y
@dogbert444 "causing longer term psychological damage."
Exactly, it's called a MENTAL hospital for a reason. - +1 y
Jeez! If it were me there, I'd go into the kitchens and prepare myself something good! Even better if you can get someone to bring in some ingredients. "Now, you cooks! Gather round and I'll show you how to cook vegan meals that will make you NEED to lose weight!"

@dogbert444 well i can recommend sugar free. i actually eat more fat now than ever but the lack of sugar in my blood means it can break down the fats properly giving me energy rather than weight gain. i lost loads since i started it and feel much fitter than i have in a long time. just wish i knew about it when i was your age
- +1 y
How could it cause "long term psychological damage?"
- +1 y
Interesting.
+1 yNo. Fuck vegans. If you are retarded, thats fine, thats your thing. But a hospital has enough things to do on its own, of course they will not adapt to your retarded shit.
15 Reply- +1 y
1. There's nothing "retarded" about choosing compassion over cruelty, but while choosing cruelty over compassion is definitely not "retarded" it certainly is stupid and selfish.
2. A hospital has a responsibility to do what it can to help its' patients and ordering a few cans of nuts or beans hardly seems too much to ask. - +1 y
If you are talking about mental hospitals you gotta understand that if they cure the patient and he/she becomes a normal person, they will stop being a vegan. And yes, being vegan is retarded. Plants are also living beings, they are just easier to catch. So yeah, humans naturally eat other living things. The fact you gave up a certain amount of living beings doesn't mean shit. You are just being a retard
- +1 y
1. Veganism isn't a mental illness
2. The vegan argument isn't that because somethings a living being it's wrong to eat, it's if it can suffer like we do.
3. If you can't comprehend this it doesn't mean that you're retarded, but it does mean that you're stupid (retarded is a medical condition).

Wow, you just keep proving how your logic is retarded (or stupid, if thats what you want). First, there are certain researches that indicate plants can also suffer. Second, by your logic, people who naturally can't feel pain, or people under anesthesia are perfectly fine to kill, since they will not "suffer". And being vegetarian is ok. Being a vegan is retarded. (again, or stupid)
- +1 y
No, again there's nothing stupid about choosing compassion over cruelty and no plants can't suffer because suffering a process of the nervous system which plants don't have and even if the person in under anesthesia they still have a neurological desire to live like all animals do and if you can't see this then you're the stupid one here.
+1 yof course it is. you can get couplet nutrition without eating meat.. thats just violating your rights. not helping you heal.
01 Reply- +1 y
complete*
dietary restrictions even have to be respected in prison by law. a person in a hospital does not legally have their rights stripped away from them. thats against the law- though practiced no doubt bc people dont speak up... Drs bully people thats no secret. but its not legal.
+1 yI don't think it's wrong. i get that it's your right to not eat meat but they are there to make sure you get better as quick as possible and eating meat is part of that routine.
05 Reply- +1 y
I get that there are vegan options but they aren't as effective and full of protein like meat is
- +1 y
Yeah but there's one thing that you're forgetting: even if it will make them put on weight faster they could end up relapsing in the future and they will be afraid to seek help because of it.
- +1 y
Yeah but all these kind of hospitals have money as one of their primary objectives so having patients with them for longer because they are on a vegan diet is not their priority
- +1 y
They want you in and out as fast as possible
- +1 y
Yeah but they also don't people to be afraid to seek help if they relapse and it the actual increase in recovery speed from meet would be negligible.
+1 yNope.
